WERE YOU INVOLVED IN A MINOR ACCIDENTt?If so, it might be cheaper to NOT use your auto insurance.
Were you involved in a minor fender bender/ accident? Did you accidentally scrape or scratch your bumper? If so, the first that comes to mind is filing an insurance claim to get it repaired, but that may not always be your best option. From increased premiums to a lower trade-in or resale value (due to a tarnished CarFax report) we will address some of the most commonly asked questions below.
If you file an “At Fault” claim, insurance companies in general will increase your premiums for 3-5 years. This is how they recoup their money and in the long run it may cost you significantly more.
When dealing with insurance companies – much like medical and dental billing – many body shops will inflate their quotes to maximize profits. While this is an industry norm, the sad truth is that damages that exceed $1,000 might be reported to CarFax and once that shows up it cannot be removed and it will affect the resale or trade-in value of your vehicle.
In addition, most minor repairs can be fixed and brought back to new without affecting the integrity of your vehicle so always consult with a body shop about the “out of pocket” cost of repairing your vehicle.
The cost of bumper repair depends on the severity of the damage. If your bumper has deep scratches or gouges then repairs can vary from $300 to $500.
If the bumper skin is severely deformed or damaged then it may have to be replaced at which point pricing will be dependent upon the year, make and model of the car.
For more information, you can either email us pictures of the damage or stop by the shop so we can give you a free estimate.
This is an issue that should be addressed on a case by case scenario. But here are a few things to consider:
- If you have already filed previous claims, keeping a small accident off your record will save you tons in the long run.
- If your deductible is $500 and the cost of repairs is $800, it may seem beneficial to go through an insurance claim (because you’re saving $300), but if your premium goes up $15 dollars a month for let’s say 2 years following the claim – that would result in you paying an additional $360.
- Had you paid the $800 out of pocket, you would have not only saved $60 in the long run, but also kept your record clean of an unnecessary claim.
